I specialize in short-form video production. I am a one-man show and do most of or all the elements of these videos, including concept generation, storyboarding and script writing, filming, directing, editing and post-production and audio production. When possible I hire out to help with larger productions, but if budget concerns are an issue I can do everything in-house.
Logos are one of the most difficult design challenges. They require the designer to convey a feeling or message of a company—that helps tell the story of its branding—in a single simple image.
My approach to logos is to always start with black and white. When something looks good and conveys the message you want using the most basic principles of design: proximity, interval, figure/ground, gestalt, etc and no color, you have achieved a solid frame work to build upon throughout a branding campaign. Tricks are easy, simplicity is difficult.
The challenge of a well designed flier is always to balance interest and meaning with digestible information. This is one area that typically is easier to be liberal with the 'form follows function' rule, as a 5" x 8" flier costs little more than a 5" x 7" flier.
I like to begin by laying out all the pieces of information that need to fit into the space, then determining a grid to give heirarchy to the information and allow adequate legibility. This information allows me to determine the minimum space or form required for the function of the flier.
As a graphic designer it's important to understand the basics of photography. Not only may you need to create images, but art directing photographers and knowing what you are looking to achieve is equally important as the mechanics of photography itself.
Posters are one of my favorite expresions of design. Large format pieces show the beauty of ink on the page wondrously. Posters are different from other design problems in that they usually are a small set of information, that relys heavily on the esthetic of the piece to engage the viewer. This is the perfect format to play with an engaging visual; an illustrative drawing, dramatic photo, or the beauty of white space.
I've long been inspired by Asian art and culture. My father started me on martial arts when I was young and as I result I grew up idealizing the bold lines and rich color palettes of the east. As a graphic designer I can't help but keep many of the principles of design in my work. With some pieces I strive for simplicity, others I do my best to weave together the details.
